Our History

Founded in 1997 by Bob Wrenick, Harpenden Pipe Band began with just a handful of pipers and drummers. The band made its debut at the Harpenden Highland Gathering in 1998, quickly growing in size and reputation.

As the band evolved, more members joined, helping to secure its future. Though Bob Wrenick eventually stepped down as Pipe Major, he remained a guiding presence until his passing in 2005. Leadership then passed to Stephen Marshall, whose dedication to precision and musical excellence continues to shape the band’s distinctive sound.

A major turning point came when the band performed at the Hamilton International Tattoo in Canada, launching its international presence.

Since then, Harpenden Pipe Band has played at iconic locations across Europe, including Belgium’s Menin Gate, the Passchendaele cemeteries, and France’s Menton Christmas Festival. They’ve also taken part in Shetland’s dramatic Up Helly Aa, marching alongside Vikings and flaming torches in a fiery celebration of heritage.

The band later joined forces with Northampton Pipe Band to perform at Bavaria’s Rehau Wiesenfest, forging a lasting partnership. Today, Harpenden Pipe Band continues to thrive—welcoming new players of all levels and proudly blending tradition with a modern edge. Always professional, always fun.
